Turner’s top-left inscription identifies the river in the foreground, shown here with a sailing boat, as the ‘Magra’, which flows through the provinces of Massa-Carrara and La Spezia in northern Italy. Silhouetted against the sky is a hilltop village, which the geographer and Turner researcher Roland Courtot has tentatively identified as Castelnuovo Magra or Trebiano.1 Turner possibly sketched this scene while crossing the river.
