Folio 29 Recto:
Fortified Buildings in ?San Clemente, near Rimini 1829
D14883
Turner Bequest CLXXVIII 29
Pencil on white laid paper, 132 x 97 mm
Inscribed in pencil by Turner ‘St C[?lement]’ above centre
Inscribed in red ink ‘29’ top right, ascending vertically
Stamped in black ‘CLXXVIII – 29’ top right, ascending vertically

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Orienting the sketchbook vertically, Turner produced these two rough outlines of fortified walls and towers. The upper view appears to be a more distant perspective of the subject shown beneath. Turner’s inscription appears to read ‘St Clement’, perhaps a reference to the fortified village of San Clemente near Rimini, in the Emilia-Romagna region.
