These sketches are part of a series in this sketchbook drawn in late August 1817 as Turner returned down the Rhine by boat from Mainz. The top sketch does not represent Burg Stahleck or Bacharach despite Turner’s adjacent inscription. Cecilia Powell’s suggestion1 that this and the middle sketch are views down and up the river to Burg Fürstenberg is retained here.
