J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

As Turner notes, this quick sketch, made with the sketchbook inverted and continued on folio 44 recto opposite (D13077), is of the Elandsgracht in Amsterdam. Finberg’s suggestion that the domed building in the distance is the Royal Palace on Dam Square (the subject of the double-spread sketch on the recto and folio 42 verso; D13075–D13076) seems unlikely as several canals lined with tall houses would have blocked the view.
