Folio 4 Verso:
?A Road above Lewes 1845
D35268
Turner Bequest CCCLIV 4a
Pencil on white wove paper, 72 x 104 mm
The vantage point here appears to be a road elevated above a town, probably Lewes, the location of sketches made on the preceding pages (folios 2 verso, 3 recto and verso, and the recto of this leaf; D35264–D35267). Trees frame the view at the left and right. A square structure sits at the right, to which the eye is drawn by a section of the page left blank, possibly the road on which Turner was travelling as he sketched this view.
