Continuing from folio 8 verso opposite (D35276), this sketch traces the profile of the remains of the Priory of St Pancras at Lewes, with the Downs seen in the background. The Priory was founded in the late eleventh century and partly-demolished at the time of the dissolution in 1537. The two parallel lines at the bottom of the page possibly indicate Turner’s position on a road leading into the town but these lines might also stand for the cutting made in October 1845 for the Brighton Lewes and Hastings Railway that scythed its way through the Priory site.
