Joseph Mallord William Turner Shakespeare Cliff, with the Road to Folkestone 1845

Folio 13 Recto:
Shakespeare Cliff, with the Road to Folkestone 1845
D35285
Turner Bequest CCCLIV 13
Pencil on white wove paper, 72 x 111 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘Rd to Fol’ centre left
Inscribed in red ink ‘13’ bottom right
Stamped in black ‘CCCLIV – 13’ bottom right
Continuing the panoramic view over Shakespeare Cliff from folio 12 verso opposite (D35284), this drawing outlines the curve of the cliff top and a building at its highest point. Turner’s view here overlooks the route of the road to Folkestone, as indicated by his note ‘Rd to Fol’, which likely prompted Finberg’s tentative naming of the whole sketchbook as ‘Near Folkestone (?)’; see its Introduction.
