Who is Hetain Patel?

Meet the artist who works with his family and loves Spiderman!

Hetain Patel is an artist who works with performance, filmmaking, painting and sculpture. He says every artwork starts as an idea and then he chooses which medium to use afterwards. That means he might have an idea and it could end up being a sculpture, or a performance, or something else!

He's made several artworks with his dad, including a film called To Dance Like Your Dad in which he copies his father's movements as he explains his work in a factory. He also made a film called The Jump where he dressed up as Spiderman and got his whole family involved!

Try it yourself

Find a friend or family member to participate in a performance with you.

  1. Warm up. Move around the room you are in. Does it feel like a big or small space? How do you feel in it?
  2. With your friend or family member, think about everyday movements such as sitting, yawning, fiddling with something, standing up or walking. How could you put a sequence of these together to make a short performance?
  3. Could you think about imitating the other person's movements or way of being? What about imitating someone you both know who isn't in the room?
  4. Practice your performance.
  5. Once you've got a performance that is 30 seconds long, can you find someone else and perform it, or capture it on camera?

Apart from a performance, what other artwork would you want to make with your family?

Could you do something that meant you could spend some quality time together, like Hetain and his dad?
