The scene is at Lewes, Sussex, with Lewes Castle in the background. The artist's widow wrote (9 September 1959): ‘Apart from the painting of the magnificent bull it is essentially a studio picture - composed. However, even for a composition the most careful studies and drawings from Nature were always made.’
