T00236 Cité volcanique
(Volcanic City) 1957
Oil on canvas, 57 3/8 x 35(146 x 89)
Presented by Mr and Mrs Charles Damiano 1959
Prov: Mr and Mrs Charles Damiano, London (purchased from the artist)
The artist said that this picture was painted early in 1957 and was based to some extent on his recollections of the volcano Mount Etna. He was very much attracted by cosmology and, as a child, used to spend hours looking at the illustrations in books on minerology, wrapt in wonder at the labyrinthine designs that a geological cutting produces. He believed that this remains in his canvases (letter of 11 March 1959).
