Collins has often been seen as an inheritor of William Blake because of his highly personal understanding of Christian spirituality. This view has been reinforced by the fact that he, like Blake, claimed to be a visionary. It is, therefore, surprising that he exhibited this drawing with the avowedly atheist Surrealists in 1936. The biomorphic forms and mysterious, absurd imagery might be readily compared to Surrealism, but Collins’s subject is a symbolic battle between forces of good and evil.
