A Canadian, Forbes studied in London, New York, Munich and Brittany before becoming a leading member of the Newlyn School in Cornwall. Inspired by Impressionism to paint everyday scenes outdoors, she brought figures into her larger exhibition landscapes to make her works more commercially appealing. This canvas shows the refinement that made her an excellent etcher as well as an effective painter.

Forbes' success as an independent artist made her a role model for other women artists: ‘I am at Mrs Forbes' feet - she wins one with her strength of colour and design’, wrote Frances Hodgkins in 1902.
