In the early 1990s Hodgkin made a series of palm tree prints, inspired by the formal simplicity and brash immediacy of travel posters he had seen on the Paris Metro. In contrast to his earlier prints these were easy to decipher. Their simple motifs and lively exuberance brought a new directness to Hodgkin’s work. He has described these prints as ‘soothing, straightforward, uplifting and raising the spirits’.
