Although Smith was not a prolific printmaker he produced a number of prints throughout his career. In the late 1920s he made linocuts. In the 1930s and 1940s he turned to etching and in the early 1950s he made lithographs. His prints were technically unsophisticated, and impressions vary considerably within an edition. They are however spontaneous and expressive works produced with directness. This was the first lithograph Smith made and describes the figure of Don Quixote and his horse in a topsy-turvy world. The print was made in two states, of which this is the first.
