Repr: Wood-engraving by Swain, Punch, Vol.85, 1883, p.81.
This is the original drawing for the cartoon ‘Incorrigible!’ which appeared in Punch on 18 August 1883. The caption runs: ‘Irish Attorney (to his Clerk, who has taken the Blue Riband, and has been “celebrating the event”). “I'LL NOT STAND IT, SURR! WID YER PLIDGES! INSTID O' TAKIN' PLIDGES YE'RE ALWAYS BREAKIN', YE'D BETTER MAKE NO PROMISES AT-ALL-AT-ALL—AND KAPE'EM!!”’
As with most of Keene's drawings for Punch after 1872, a photographic negative of T02087 was printed on the surface of the wood-block, which was then engraved by Swain. The original drawing and the final print are therefore in the same direction.
A smaller drawing of the same subject was in the Leicester Galleries Keene exhibition in 1966 (36).
