This is one of several views John Linell sketched and painted near his home in London. We see rundown buildings in the shadows, and the gravel pits and new roads of Kensington beyond. It was not a conventionally picturesque subject and Linnell did not idealise the scene. By the end of the century the area was completely built up, with Paddington Station occupying the fields in the middle. Linnell was an associate of John Constable and one of the first artists to work in this naturalistic way.
