The artist wrote from Dalbeattie (15 April 1955): ‘The picture was painted in the studio from a drawing made on the spot at the coast near here. The drawing is almost purely factual-essentially a structural affair - and the scheme of colour an attempt to convey the mood and feeling of the place.’
