With the sketchbook turned to the right at the fore-edge of the page is a sketch of Carlisle Castle. It is recognisable by comparison with a sketch in the Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border sketchbook (Tate D25849; Turner Bequest CCLXVI 45) which shows exactly the same view of the castle, though in more detail and with Carlisle Cathedral in the background.
