With the sketchbook turned to the right are three sketches of Carlisle (see folio 39 verso; D25839). The top and bottom sketches are of Carlisle from the west, and both show the River Eden winding towards the castle in the foreground. There is another sketch of this view on folio 42 (D25843). The top sketch also shows the cathedral. Carlisle Castle is studied from the west in the middle sketch.
