Turner only very occasionally interrupts his routine of drawing buildings and general views in order to study a weed or shrub growing near his path. The butterbur with its distinctive large round leaves was a favourite with many watercolour artists as providing simply achieved but effective foreground texture.

Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
