Catalogue entry

For the Tour de St Michel, see folios 1 and 61 of this sketchbook (D04393, D04458). As noted by David Hill in correspondence with the author,1 this sketch was made as Turner began his ascent to the village of Les Houches and the Chamonix valley. Turner made further sketches near Les Houches on folios 64 and 72 verso (D04463, D04480), and a drawing in his larger St Gothard and Mont Blanc sketchbook (Tate D04606; Turner Bequest LXXV 14).
