For life studies in this sketchbook see note to the recto (D10418); a similar draped figure is on folio 6 verso of the sketchbook (D10421). It seems likely that the seated figure is related to the one seated at the base of a brazier in the right foreground of The Decline of the Carthaginian Empire (Tate N00499)1 given the presence of other sketches and verse for the picture in this book (see Introduction).
