Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 69 Recto:
A Valley in Snowdonia 1798
Turner Bequest XXXVIII 43
Pencil on white wove paper, 229 x 332 mm
Blind-stamped lower right with Turner Bequest monogram
Stamped in black ‘XXXVIII 43’ bottom left, descending vertically
Finberg guessed that this drawing shows Snowdon from Capel Curig,1 but the viewpoint is plainly closer to the mountain, which looms high over the spectator’s head. We are perhaps standing in Nant Gwynant, near Llyn Gwynant, to the south-east of the peak. Turner would have recorded the view on his way east towards Capel Curig; see folio 70 recto (D01332; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 78).
Finberg 1909, I, p.86.
Technical notes:
There are colour smears along the lower edge of the drawing.
Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
