The pencil work is by Girtin. This was copied from a sketch by John Robert Cozens (1752–1797) in Beckford Sketchbook, IV, p.5, inscribed ‘On the Coast of Pausilippo near the Point – Octr 18 – From Marechiano | which signifies Still-sea’ (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, D1975.7.5).1 Cozens’s inscription notes ‘The arches, some antique remains ... Remains of a Temple -’.
