The basis for a finished watercolour executed for Viscount Malden (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester),1 as noted among the ‘Order’d Drawings’ towards the beginning of this sketchbook (D40557). Turner was engaged by Malden, later Earl of Essex, to make views of Essex’s Hertfordshire house, Cassiobury, and later in this decade was commissioned to make a further set of views of Hampton Court by Richard Colt Hoare of Stourhead; see the Hereford Court sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest XXXVIII).
