Stylistically the drawing of St Mary Redcliffe does not belong to 1795 but more probably to 1793–4; compare Tate D00355 and D00356 (Turner Bequest XXII B, C). It cannot therefore have originally formed part of this sketchbook, but should perhaps be grouped with drawings made in the West Country earlier in the decade, for example at Hereford and St Briavel’s; compare Tate D00150 and D00376 (Turner Bequest XIII E, XXIII B).
Technical notes:
The sheet is discoloured from prolonged exposure.
Verso:
Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
