Finberg guessed that this drawing shows Arreton Church, but Dearden has identified it as St Olave’s, Gatcombe, about two miles south of Carisbrooke (see folios 24 recto, 25 recto, 26 recto; D00431–D00433; Turner Bequest XXIV 24, 25, 25a). Dearden suggests that Turner passed through the village on his way from Newport to the southern coast of the island, but he may have taken it in on his way back to Newport from Yarmouth at the end of his tour (see the introduction to the sketchbook). The crocketed corner pinnacles on the tower recorded by Turner have not survived.
Technical notes:
There are traces at the top and top right of blue colour from a watercolour on a previous page, perhaps that on folio 26 recto (D00433; Turner Bequest XXIV 25a).
Verso:
Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
