This sheet is half of a larger one, having originally been joined to Tate D00378 (Turner Bequest XXIII D), which has a drawing of the same building. There are several towns and villages in the West Midlands named Withington and the identification of this subject is uncertain, but it may be the castle gatehouse at Whittington, near Bridgnorth, which this building somewhat resembles, although the structure today has been ‘improved’ with gothic windows and machicolation.
Verso:
Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
