Finberg considered, perhaps rightly, that the sheet dates from about 1796; but the technique of the pencil study at top left, for instance, seems consistent with a date of about 1793. Like the other studies in this sequence (Tate D00367, D40243, D00397, D00398, D00710, D00713; Turner Bequest XXII N, XXIII T 1, W, X, XXIX E, H) it is concerned with the staffage of the topographical view.
