This is a more fully worked-up version of the view recorded on folio 44 recto (D01324; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 70). Traces of the watercolour washes used in completing it have spread onto folio 46 recto (D01284; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 32). Here the presence of the volcanic lake, Llyn Cau, is suggested by a pale strip below the steep cliffs of rock in the distance. Finberg identified the spot as Llyn Idwal, a similar volcanic lake on the north side of the summit of Glyder Fawr (which is not, as he states, near Betws-y-Coed).1 For a note on other sketches of Cader in this book see under D01284.
