D01392
Turner Bequest XXXIX 37
Pencil on white wove writing paper, 170 x 266 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. The church has all the appearance of an abbatial structure, and may be the Abbey at Shrewsbury, which in its present state, however, has a tower at its west end, not over the crossing.
Verso:
Blank, save for a pencil stroke; inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘Bromfield’; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
This inscription refers not to the town depicted on the recto but to the view on folio 39 recto opposite (D01455; Turner Bequest XXXIX 91).
