Pontcysyllte spans the valley of the Dee east of Llangollen, carrying the Ellesmere Canal 38 metres (126 feet) above the valley floor. It was built by Thomas Telford, as was the Chirk aqueduct which Turner drew on folio 37 recto (D01391; Turner Bequest XXXIX 36). The ancient Welsh castle of Dinas Brân is visible in the centre distance. It appears again in the more general view of the Vale of Llangollen on folio 41 recto (D01394; Turner Bequest XXXIX 39).
