Finberg’s suggestion that this drawing, made with the page turned horizontally, represents ‘a bridge or aqueduct’ in the ‘Vale of Llangollen’1 obviously refers to the Pontcysyllte, which Turner drew on folio 40 recto (Tate D01393; Turner Bequest XXXIX 38). But this ignores the scale of the surrounding trees, which indicates that the arcaded structure in the centre of this view is an ornamental bridge or other feature of a private estate.
