The subject is continued on folio 22 recto opposite (D01495; Turner Bequest XL 20). Turner visited Abergavenny and took a considerable interest in the Skyrrid, the Magic Mountain, on his first tour to this part of the world in 1792; see Tate D00143–D00145 and D00181 (Turner Bequest XII N, O, P. XVII F).
Here he bestows only a cursory glance on the town, though he made a sketch of the bridge which was to become the basis for an exhibited watercolour; see the following drawing on folios 22 verso–23 recto (D01496–D01497; Turner Bequest XL 20a–21). A larger drawing of the same view is in the contemporary Cyfarthfa sketchbook (Tate D01655; Turner Bequest XLI 24).
