Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the broach spire of the church in the background may provide a clue as to the location of this view, continued on folio 48 recto opposite (D01540; Turner Bequest XL 46). It is reminiscent of St Edmund’s Church, Crickhowell (see folios 25 verso–26 recto; D01502–D01503; Turner Bequest XL 23a–24), and the position of the castle ruins on a low hill in the foreground suggests that this is a view of the town from the approach along the Abergavenny road. A colour study derived from this drawing is Tate D01902 (Turner Bequest XLIV Z).
