Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this subject, one of the sequence of very perfunctory sketches in this book, seems to be related to the studies of shipping in the contemporary Cyfarthfa sketchbook; see Tate D01657, D01658 and D01659 (Turner Bequest XLI 26, 26a, 27). The river may be the Wye, or possibly the Taff.
The subject is continued on folio 80 recto opposite (D01594; Turner Bequest XL 78), where some perpendicular pencil marks at the extreme left may be construed as a castle or other substantial building.
