Joseph Mallord William Turner Distant View of the Malvern Hills 1798

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 19 Verso:
Distant View of the Malvern Hills 1798
D01713
Turner Bequest XLII 38
Pencil and gouache on buff laid paper, 174 x 125 mm
Stamped in black ‘XLII – 38’ bottom left

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The drawing is continued on folio 20 recto opposite (D01714; Turner Bequest XLII 39). As the inscription on that page suggests, this is a view of the Malvern Hills, perhaps looking north along the ridge towards the Herefordshire Beacon and, farther off, the Worcester Beacon, from near Hollybush, on the road between Hereford and Tewkesbury which Turner may have taken on his return journey in 1798.
