This is a study for one of the set of views at Salisbury commissioned by Sir Richard Colt Hoare from Turner in about 1795, being the second subject on Colt Hoare’s list (Tate D36332; Turner Bequest CCCLXVIII A). The finished watercolour developed from this drawing is in the British Museum, London.1

Technical notes:
The incidental strip of blue colour along the top edge of the sheet indicates that another study, perhaps fully coloured, was made on the same sheet and cut off. There is a brown paint smear at the top left.
