This fragmentary sketch is probably the beginning of a study of a female nude, perhaps intended for inclusion in one of the ‘Holy Family’ subjects that Turner was trying out in this book; see folios 17 verso, 18 recto, 31 verso and 33 recto (D04935, D04936, D04962, D04965; Turner Bequest LXXXI 34, 35, 60, 63). There is another drawing of someone looking down on folio 25 recto (D04949; Turner Bequest LXXXI 47).
