Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 65 Verso:

D02565
Turner Bequest LIII 65a
Ink on white wove paper, 162 x 112 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The subject is continued on folio 66 recto opposite (D02566). The fragment of a ruined building in the centre distance may indicate that this is one of the sequence of drawings that Turner made around Norham Castle; see under folio 42 verso (D02534).
This is the only drawing in the sketchbook to have been executed in pen and ink, and occurs in the middle of a group of blank pages, after which the book has been used inverted in relation to its current foliation, working in from the other end.
