Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this is presumably a scene on the cliffs close to Whitby. The Yorkshire coast between there and Scarborough appears to be the setting for the long sequence of sketches on folios 83 verso–98 verso (D02746–D02776).
