This drawing, made with the page turned horizontally, shows a view that is continuous with that on folio 20 verso opposite (D02025). It includes a distant view of the castle that Turner was to make the subject of his Diploma work for the Royal Academy collection, the oil painting Dolbadern Castle, North Wales,1 exhibited in 1800. Other drawings of Dolbadarn in this book are on folios 41 recto and 44 recto (D02054, D02060). He had already noted the ruins while on tour here in 1798; see the Hereford Court and North Wales sketchbooks (Tate D01300, D01388; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 47, XXXIX 33).
