Hilton once stated that 'there are situations, states of mind, moods, etc., which call for some artistic expression'. 'Oi Yoi Yoi' demonstrates Hilton's capacity to express in paint areas of life which art sometimes neglects: experiences which are spontaneous, awkward and slightly ridiculous. Hilton described the subject of this painting as 'my wife dancing on a verandah, we were having a quarrel. She was nude and angry at the time and she was dancing up and down shouting oi yoi yoi'. The painting's impact derives partly from its bold composition and dynamically contrasting colours. As Hilton remarked: 'Any picture which does not give an immediate sensation of vitality is a dead picture'.
