Yes, we're mad! No, we're not joking! Sir Roland Penrose Memorial Lecture by Michael Landy

18 November 2013 at 18.30–20.00

Cos you walk in here sad, we'll send you out smiling-bow-legged, knock-kneed and knackered with bargains.

Michael Landy RA is primarily known as an installation artist. One of the Young British Artists, his sculptural installations and performances explore political and social themes, such as the nature of consumerism and commodity.

Join us for this special opportunity to hear Landy talk about the themes and issues surrounding his work and more exclusively about rubbish. The event includes performative elements and a raffle, offering a unique chance to win one of Michael Landy's 'artworks'.

Biography

Michael Landy was born in 1963 in London, where he continues to live and work. He studied at Goldsmiths and while there he exhibited in the Freeze exhibition organised by Damien Hirst, the now historic show which launched the YBA group. Landy was elected as a Royal Academician in May 2008. Throughout his practice the artist has created epic installations and performances to explore political and social issues. His 2001 monumental commission for Artangel, Break Down, was a systematic destruction of his 7,227 possessions in a former department store in London. In 2004, he created Semi-detached, a full-scale model of the front and back facades of his parents’ house, shown at Tate Britain. Landy is also known for his meticulous, detailed drawings, having created a vast series of 80 intimate portraits of his family and friends, as well as his well known series of carefully rendered botanical drawings of weeds. Most recently Landy was the artist in residence at the National Gallery his show there Saints Alive is on until 24 November 2013.

This is the 13th Sir Roland Penrose Memorial Lecture. The lecture is sponsored by The Elephant Trust which was set up by Sir Roland Penrose and Lee Miller in 1975 to enable artists and those presenting their work to undertake and complete projects when frustrated by lack of funds.

During the 1990s Michael Landy made four major installations, including Scrapheap Services, 1995. Although motivated by personal concerns, these installations caught the mood of social change, labour market reforms and political ideology at the tail-end of the Thatcher era in Britain. All this had a profound impact on the emerging, metropolitan art scene of the time, soon to be labelled 'young British art'.
