Here Turner depicts a scene at Innsbruck looking along the Marie-Theresien-Strasse, with the Spitalskirche at left and the Stadtturm at centre. The Annasäule, a Marian column dedicated to Saint Anne, can be seen at right with the inscription ‘St anna Col’ above it. The column commemorates Saint Anne’s day (26 July) in 1703 when the Tyrol defeated Bavarian armies during the War of Spanish Succession. A statue of Mary tops the column and statues of four saints (St Anne, St George, St Cassian of Imola and St Vigilius of Trent) can be seen at its base.
