Turner must have bought this book from the Viennese bookbinder whose printed label it bears, Anton Lehenbauer of Rothgasse, as he walked to the city centre from his hotel in the Leopoldstadt. It covers the whole of his journey from Vienna through Austria and northern Italy until his arrival in Venice on 9 September. He is recorded as reaching Innsbruck on 3 September. The sketch on f.55v shows Maria-Theresien-Strasse with St Anne's column in the right foreground, while that on f.56r shows the view from across the river Inn, with the bridge itself at the centre, just below the cathedral. The mountains which encircle Innsbruck form the backdrop to both sketches.
