This slight view appears to be to the south-east from the vicinity of the Upperton Monument folly in Petworth Park, with Petworth House indicated near the horizon, about a mile and a half away.1 With regard to Turner’s inscription, Ian Warrell has noted that it ‘shows him pinpointing Petworth with obvious affection in a distant landscape’.2
The sequence of sketches between here and (apparently) folio 26 recto (D18753), and possibly 26 verso (D18754), comprises Sussex subjects in the vicinity of Petworth, those as far as this page showing the park west of the house. For a note on Lord Egremont, Petworth, and Turner’s work there, see the sketchbook’s Introduction.
1
The general subject was identified from Turner’s inscription as ‘“Petworth” spire indicated’ in undated MS notes by C.F. Bell (died 1966) in a copy of Finberg 1909, Tate Britain Prints and Drawings Room, vol.II, p.649; for the viewpoint see Ian Warrell in Butlin, Luther and Warrell 1989, p.131.
2
Warrell 1989, p.148.
Technical notes:
A long tear halfway down the outer edge has been repaired. The leaf has been removed from the book at some stage and laid onto a shallow modern stub.
