The sketch running across the upper register is a view of Trier from a north-westerly perspective, looking up the Moselle towards the Roman bridge. At left Turner has inscribed the word ‘Mill’. The larger sketch below is a view of the city from the west, looking towards the sandstone cliffs at Pallien, the town on the opposite bank of the Moselle to Trier; see also folios 50 recto and verso (Tate D28256, D28257; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 50, 50a).
