Rendered with bold pencil line, this sketch depicts the Bock and the Rham plateaux with its various fortifications and churches from the northern stretches of the Alzette valley. Elements of this sketch and others (Tate D28281–D28283, D28286–D28287; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 64–65, 66a–67) were combined to form a gouache, watercolour and pen and ink drawing on blue paper of a similar date.1

Part of the topographical plan of Luxembourg extends onto this page from the folio opposite (Tate D28284; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 65 a).
