Here Turner depicts the craggy and precipitous valley of the Alzette. Elements of this sketch and others (Tate D28281–D28283, D28285, D28287; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 64–65, 66, 67) were combined to form a gouache, watercolour and pen and ink drawing on blue paper of a similar date.1
